WHAT IS INTERNAL MEDICINE?

Internal medicine deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease in teens and adults. General internists are primary care doctors who are focused on adult medicine, including geriatric care.

They focus their work on the wide spectrum and health concerns affecting teens and adults, and are trained in the diagnosis, treatment and management of chronic illnesses. They also work with patients to promote healthy lifestyles and to prevent illness.

In many cases, internists care for patients over the course of their adult lives. They also consult with specialists, such as surgeons, orthopedists or obstetricians, to provide follow-up or ongoing treatment, such as post-surgical care.

According to the American College of Physicians, internists:

  • Receive special training to solve challenging diagnostic problems
  • Treat patients with severe chronic illnesses, and also provide care when a patient is suffering from several illnesses at the same time
  • Work to provide patients with an understanding of preventive care and wellness in areas such aswomen’s health, substance abuse and mental health

Although internists focus on adult care, they are not considered medical specialists, such as surgeons, gastroenterologists or cardiologists. Therefore, a visit to our office does not require specialty co-pay for insurance purposes.
